"Miss Cleo, Maniac, and Matt!"

By   Wed, Apr 15, 2009

They say there are only 2 things certain in life: death and taxes. Well, appropiately on this tax day, there was one more certainty: one more contestant would leave the American Idol stage.... Or so we thought... That's right, the judges have messed with the universe and used their "Judge's Save" rule to cancel out the elimination of the talented but struggling Matt Giraud!!!  I'm sure it came as a huge surprise to a lot of America, but not to my Idol Thoughts readers. As you all know, I predicted the EXACT bottom 3, bottom 2, eliminated contestant, and that they'd use the "Save". Forgive me for feeling a bit like Miss Cleo, but I may have to open a psychic hotline after I finish writing tonight's Results show blog.

Ok, I'm gonna stop gloating and get down to business. After another wacky intro highlighting last night's performance show that seemed like a commercial for "American Idol- the Death Cage Match", we got a Ford commercial. Singing J. Geils Band's early 80's hit "Freeze Frame", the Idols posed and sang from magazine covers, perhaps envisioning their future. (well, maybe not Lil Rounds). Next, they stepped it up a notch with a decent group performance of Michael Sembello's # 1 hit from 1983, "Maniac". Some interesting things happened during this number from the film Flashdance: the Idol's sang LIVE, Allison messed up the words, Anoop almost fell off the stairs into the sway-pit, and I realized that this is the song Matt should've sung last night. I have to say I kinda enjoyed the whole number. Am I crazy? Or was I just drinking some of my famous psychic voodoo juice again?

We were then treated to more movie madness for this week's "Idol at the Movies" theme with a ridiculously long psuedo-commercial for Zac Efron's new movie "17 Again".(Side note~ how much do you love Zac's costar, the incredibly funny Leslie Mann?) Finally, we got the information we'd been waiting for as Ryan unveiled the bottom 3: Anoop, Lil and Matt. No shockers there.  And no shock that we'd have to wait for the results after a few performances from some "superstars".

First up, Idol welcomed back a true superstar as Jennifer Hudson took the Idol stage for the first time since being eliminated in 7th place back on season 3. That's right, 7th place! America what were you thinking? She went out before John Stevens and Jasmine Trias! OMG! ... Well, thank goodness Jennifer got the last laugh, as she has since won an Oscar, Golden Globe, Grammy, SAG award, BET award, NAACP Image award and the list goes on. She proved she's worth all those awards with a great performance of her current Top 10 R & B single "If This Isnt Love". And she looked great doing it. May the "Spotlight" always shine on Miss Jennifer!

Not so welcome was the other current superstar, Hannah Montana, excuse me, Miley Cyrus. Performing her top 5 hit "The Climb" from her "Hannah Montana" movie, Miley was a nasal, awkward mess. While I have to say it's rather catchy song, Miley did her best to ruin it with an off key, insincere, and indulgent performance. She even tried to rock out at the end. I just wanted it to end. However, we did learn one thing. We now know where Danny Gokey gets his over-exagerrated arm movements... from Hannah Montana!

After the most over-exposed teen in the world finally left the stage, we got the results. Anoop (who was rather frustrated to be in the bottom 3 again) was sent to safety. Then, Lil got her good news, and Matt had to lip sync for his life! Ooops, wrong reality show. Matt actually sang live for his life. And he did a better job tonight infusing "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" with some true emotion. Matt clearly wants to be in the competition and deserves another shot.  After much dramatic nonesense from Simon and Ryan, Simon delivered the good news. Matt was safe! That's right, the judges actually used their "Judges Save", and on a contestant who deserved it! All the contestants rejoiced and embraced Matt. I was truly happy for him. It seemed all was right in the world...

That is, until Simon uttered 4 ominous words: "Next Week is Disco". He further threatened the contestants that two of them will be going home next week. And now, I'm scared..

So, just who will try to be "Stayin Alive" and" Turn the Beat Around" good enough to keep on marching to the finals at the Kodak? We'll see. Until, then, this is Miss Cleo, er, Idol Thoughts saying, in the immortal words of Carrie  Underwood... "I Told You So"!
