Fathers, Mothers, Sons and Daughters
I've had a wonderfully wacky idea about the parentage of some of our LOST characters. It's a bit convoluted so bear with me. It also relies on tying together some ideas I've picked up around the net so it's not 100% original, but the conclusion is.
First of all, I'm going to assume for argument Ms. Hawking is Daniel Faraday's mother. I've speculated about it before, and I think the way the show presented her is evidence enough to take it as a given. Especially obvious seemed to be the way he was unable to tell Desmond her name before jumping. The actor who plays Faraday is about 40 (though I think the character is a bit younger), and was already a physicist at Oxford in 1996. This means he was born in the late 60's, early 70's.
Second, Charlotte mentions at one point in the last episode that she has started to forget things, including her mother's maiden name. Fans have speculated that perhaps Ms. Hawking is actually her mother, due to similar inability to name her as Faraday had. Could Charlotte be Ms. Hawking's daughter? According to Ben's dossier, she was born in Essex, England on July 2, 1979 and raised by David and Jeannette and in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire with two younger sisters. This information may not be all correct, as Charlotte implied, and the parents mentioned could have been adopted parents.
So further speculation - Charlotte and Daniel have been shown to be close, having an almost tender romantic relationship. But is it possible their closeness is not based on romance but siblings? Could they both be Ms. Hawking's children? Maybe they know it, maybe they don't but it could explain why they feel drawn to each other and don't realize it. It sounds a bit soap-opera-ish to expect that kind of storyline, but if the romantic attraction could eventually turn into sibling affection without really skipping a beat.
Ok, so normal LOST blogs would stop there, but not this one. No, boy. Hang on to your hats..
Let's assume for the same of argument, Daniel and Charlotte are Ms. Hawking's children and brother and sister. Half- or full? Just wait..
Separate fan speculation has wondered if Ms. Hawking might not be an older version of Penny Widmore. The veracity of this idea is the subject of posts elsewhere (although if you go back and read Ms. Hawking's character page on Lostpedia with the idea she is an older Penny, it certainly is intriguing). But for the moment imagine she is an older Penny. Penny, who, at sometime in her objective future goes back in time and has these two children. For reasons unknown, she keeps Daniel (since he knows who she is, and worked with her at Oxford) and gave Charlotte up for adoption.
Then who's the father? Well, Desmond of course. He would have to go back in time with her, live in the past, have the children and eventually point them toward the island and help save the castaways and the world. Perhaps the reason Ms. Hawking is in the photo with the elder Brother Campbell is because he is actually Future Desmond? I don't recall if Campbell had a Scottish brogue, but that may be stepping too far into wild speculation.
But consider now why Desmond is Faraday's constant? Because Desmond is his father.
Wild, huh? But I think it has a good chance of being fairly accurate.
