Fall TV Preview
He's baaaack......
Can America's favorite serial killer have it all? Husband, father, bread winner...serial killer. That's the million dollar question for this season of Dexter.
We certainly won't know the answer on the September 27 season opener but finding out how it will all unravel is the fun part. Season 4 puts forward an array of possibilities and challenges for Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), the serial killer who works as a blood spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department, now that he's entered the world of marital bliss.
Last season concluded with Dexter marrying a pregnant Rita (Julie Benz) and vowing "to be the best husband and father he could be." In season 4, Dexter appears to have everything he could possibly want except the one thing he actually needs ---which is time to kill.
Although diaper duty appears to have pushed Dexter's little killing hobby to the backseat, that's not to say that he won't be giving in to his urges. After all, season 4 has a new villain on the loose and he comes in the form of John Lithgow, who always has the capacity to freak viewers out. As reported in the past, the 3rd Rock from the Sun star will be playing a prolific serial killer known as the "Trinity Killer"-he kills in threes- and leads an unassuming double life similar to Dexter's.
Season 4 will also bring about the return of Keith Carradine's FBI Agent Lundy, who is back in Miami to track down the Trinity Killer, and possibly disrupt Deb's romance with Anton.
Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
NBC's Big Gamble: The Jay Leno Show
"Meat and potatoes. Good food at sensible prices," he says of the new show. "That's all it really is. It's not some groundbreaking thing. It's just a comedy show."
That's how Jay Leno describes his new prime time show airing five nights a week in the coveted 10 p.m. time slot on NBC. Gone from the NBC schedule are the million-dollar-an-episode hour long dramas, and in its place a one hour comedy show. A comedy show on a once powerhouse network that now languishes in fourth place among broadcast networks.
So what can we expect to see on the new show? Fewer stars promoting their latest projects such as movies, TV shows and albums. There will be an abundance of musical guests and a corp of "comedy correspondents" that includes Rachel Harris, D.L. Hughley, Mikey Day, Liz Feldman, Brian Unger and Owen Benjamin. And he's keeping the monologue, "funny headlines," and Jaywalking segments.
The first show alone will feature Jay-Z, Kanye West who made a complete ass out of himself last night at the MTV Video Music Awards, Rihanna in her first major appearance since being beaten by Chris Brown.
Barbara Walters is probably somewhere salivating at the prospect of Rihanna and to a lesser degree Kanye, and the opportunity to question both, but because it's a comedy show, its unlikely Jay will wade into either of those topics.
And that would be ok if he'd never hosted the Tonight Show. Yes, Leno is a comedian, but who can forget a contrite Hugh Grant doing a mea culpa on Jay's couch, or Arnold Schwarzenegger announcing his run for governor of California. Oh, and Fred Thompson announcing his candidacy for president?
But that's not what this new show is all about. It's about getting a bigger bang for the buck by producing a cheaper show, and appealing to a broad audience. Many industry insiders have said the show will be a success if it manages to pull in the numbers Leno had as host of the Tonight Show, which will still be far below the primetime dramas it's up against.
And what if it doesn't work? How long will NBC stay with The Jay Leno Show?
NBC intends to stick with the show for "at least a year and, we hope, many years beyond that," Rick Ludwin, executive vice president for late-night and prime-time series, told reporters at the TV Critics summer meeting in July.
"TV has changed. It's all about what's happening right now," Leno says.
And what's happening right now is NBC's biggest gamble. If this works, and that is a mighty big if, the most that can be accomplished is to staunch the hemorrhaging of cash from the NBC coffers.
At worst? What few viewers NBC still has after years of poor programming (Kath & Kim, Crusoe, My Own Worst Enemy) and the canceling of quality shows such as Freak and Geeks, Life, and Ed, will complete the exodus to cable.
The suits at NBC should consult with their cousin network, USA, which in recent years has found great success with shows such as Monk, Burn Notice, In Plain Sight and even the annoying Psych.
It is doubtful that Leno will become "must see TV." What's not in doubt is that this is NBC's biggest gamble ever, and that Brandon Tartikoff is spinning in his grave.
The Jay Leno Show airs week nights at 10 p.m. on NBC.
King of the Hill Comes to an End
Since its debut in 1997, KING OF THE HILL has followed the life of HANK HILL (Mike Judge), his wife, PEGGY (Kathy Najimy), their 13-year-old son, BOBBY (Pamela Adlon), their 18-year-old niece, LUANNE (Brittany Murphy), her husband LUCKY (Tom Petty), their newborn baby girl GRACIE and his beer guzzling neighborhood buddies, DALE (Johnny Hardwick), BILL (Stephen Root) and BOOMHAUER (Judge).
In the series finale episode, “The Boy Can’t Help It” / ”The Honeymooners,” Bobby becomes quite the ladies’ man when several girls in his class consider him a potential date for the Homecoming dance. When he realizes the girls are just playing with his emotions and are not really that interested, he asks his pal Connie to the dance. Also in the episode, Hank is shocked when his mother announces she is marrying a man she has only known for a few weeks. Soon after, the newlyweds celebrate by purchasing an RV and heading to Hank’s. When Hank's mom and new stepfather have a heated argument, she takes off with the RV and Hank is left to rescue his mother once again.

The award-winning half-hour animated comedy series has received numerous accolades, including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program. The series is translated into numerous languages and is licensed in almost 50 countries around the world.
Ilene Chaiken is Back with The Real L Word
Roll out the welcome mat because the ladies of THE REAL L WORD: Los Angeles are moving in to show the world how it’s really done -- sexy, sophisticated, Sapphic style. The nine-episode, one-hour reality series comes from the preeminent chronicler of lesbian stories, Ilene Chaiken, who served as creator and executive producer of the long-running SHOWTIME drama series, THE L WORD, and will executive produce the new series along with reality producers Magical Elves (Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz) who made runaway successes of Project Runway, Top Chef and Last Comic Standing. The series will premiere on SHOWTIME in 2010.
THE REAL L WORD: Los Angeles will follow a group of real-life, high-profile, left coast lesbians as they go about their daily lives, at work and play. Chaiken and the Elves plan to show viewers that they can be every bit as glamorous, fashionable, fabulous and even as cutthroat as those hetero housewives.
"THE L WORD is a powerful franchise for us and we became very excited when creator Ilene Chaiken came up with the idea of doing a reality version of this iconic show," says Showtime Networks President of Entertainment Robert Greenblatt. "Not only are we thrilled to be working with her again, we're also very pleased to get into business with venerable reality producers like Magical Elves as we expand into a form of programming that is new for us. Unlike the plethora of reality shows out there that simply follow people around, we promise that THE REAL L WORD: Los Angeles -- like the fictional version -- could only be found on premium cable."
"Even though we concluded our 6th season of the THE L WORD on SHOWTIME this past March, I believe we are not nearly finished telling our L WORD stories," says Chaiken. "SHOWTIME has yet again come forward to continue with us this mission to entertain and enlighten and bring more "L" to the world, and I am so excited to be back at it with them, this time joining with the Magical Elves to tell the real life stories of THE REAL L WORD."
Manson
It is odd that on Labor Day the History Channel would choose to air a docudrama about the Manson family murders instead of oh say, something about labor in the United States.
Forty years after the brutal Tate-LaBianca murders, Linda Kasabian, the only family member who was present at the murders, but did not participate, thus escaping prosecution, “tells her story.”
For years Kasabian has lived in secret under an assumed name, fearing retribution by a Manson follower, and will only allow her face to be shown on TV via backlighting and dark glasses.
Whether her life is really in danger is a matter of opinion. Manson’s followers have largely faded into the wood work (or more likely gotten clean and sober), and those literally with blood on their hands are all safely locked in prison, having long ago renounced Manson. Kasabian recently appeared on Larry King Live with ardent supporter Vincent Bugliosi, who was also the lead prosecutor of Charles Manson and granted Kasabian immunity in exchange for her testimony against the family.
They were both on to promote “Manson.” Bugliosi has always fiercely defended Kasabian, claiming she was “cut from different cloth” than the other family members.
Kasabian has expressed grief over the murders and claims to be haunted by the screams she heard that night. She cites fear as her reason for not running for help, and that may be a legitimate reason considering her co-horts were cutting people up mere feet from her.
All of this is of little comfort to Sharon Tate’s sister Debra, who has long voiced her opinion that Linda Kasabian should not have gotten off scot free. It is bizarre that the History Channel would air this on Labor Day instead of the actual anniversary of the murders in August. What’s even more bizarre is that the History Channel would make this in the first place. Yes, it’s a part of history, but do we really need to revisit this particular story?
"I said make it stop and she said,
No I can't, it's too late."
Linda Kasabian
Inside Charles Manson's warped world of fear, sex, and drug-induced mind control,
The cult leader turned a group of harmless hippies into a gang of brutal murderers.
Shortly after midnight on August 9, 1969, a car pulled up to actress Sharon Tate's sprawling Benedict Canyon home she rented. As the driver, Linda Kasabian, stood guard outside, three of her "family" members committed one of the grisliest mass murders in American history.
Forty years later, HISTORY presents a chilling drama-documentary featuring exclusive, first-hand testimony from Kasabian, as well as interviews with Vincent Bugliosi, the chief prosecutor in the case and author of Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders; family member Catherine Share, aka "Gypsy"; and Debra Tate, Sharon Tate's sister.
MANSON chronicles the nine months leading up to what Manson called Helter Skelter, the title of a Beatles song twisted by him to mean an apocalyptic race war the murders were supposed to ignite. As Manson subjected his followers to LSD-fueled orgies and increasingly bizarre tests of loyalty, they fell completely under his spell. Realizing he could get his family to kill anyone, Manson embarked on a murderous mission that would shock the nation to the core. Manson's name has become an emblem of insanity, violence and the macabre; his crimes mark an emphatic end to the 1960s.
MANSON takes viewers deep inside America in the late 1960s into a world of hate, fear, sex, and mind-control. It vividly details how Charles Manson transformed a harmless group of hippies, mostly young women from decent families into a gang of brutal murderers. The special, a drama-documentary, weaves in rare archival footage and on-camera eyewitness testimony to present a spellbinding portrait of a true nightmare in U.S. history. At the center of the film is Kasabian, the star witness for the prosecution, who has emerged from hiding to tell the full story of the murders for the first time in four decades.
Kasabian, then a 21-year-old flower child fleeing an abusive marriage with her baby, recounts finding love and freedom with Manson and his disciples: He gave me the feeling that I would be cared for, and that he took care of everybody. We were like his children. Deep under their leader's drug-fuelled spell, Linda and the family were soon lured into his paranoid vendetta against The Establishment. She recounts what it was like to witness the horrific murders, and how she ultimately risked her life and her daughter's to escape.

GAVIN ROSSDALE TO GUEST STAR ON "CRIMINAL MINDS"
Rossdale will play a Goth rock star who has become lost in the frightening alter-ego he portrays on stage — an alter-ego whom the BAU team suspects may be a brutal serial killer.
Rossdale was last seen in the independent feature film "How to Rob a Bank." Previously, he appeared in the films "Constantine," "Little Black Book" and "Game of their Lives." Rossdale first attained worldwide fame as the lead singer/songwriter for the UK post-grunge rock band Bush. Their first album, "Sixteen Stone" (1994), was a huge commercial success.
Almost overnight, Bush went from playing small pubs in London to headlining arenas in the US, the result of extensive, non-stop touring. The band went on to produce three more albums together. Rossdale was featured on the Sony Pictures XXX soundtrack in 2002 with a song called "Adrenaline." The song was also the official theme song for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE)'s "Unforgiven" pay-per-view event in September 2002 and was used in the ending credits of "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines." Additionally, he has just completed his International Tour on his latest solo album, "Wunderlust." Rossdale resides in Los Angeles with his wife, Gwen Stefani, and their two sons.
